Fork in the Road
I am off on a journey called life,
to walk under desert sunsets,
and to sing beneath Milky Way stars.
I am dancing on white sand beaches,
running through wildflower-dappled valleys,
and napping with my toes and fingers in the sand.
Isn’t it grand?
And there is a part of my heart that wishes you were journeying by my side.
For a while, we walked hand in hand.
Now I am walking alone,
and the road is beautiful.
I hope the road you are on is beautiful too.
I miss the way it felt to smile beneath towering Yellowstone peaks while we dreamed of where future roads might lead us,
together.
But your road led one way
and mine led in another.
Neither path was worse or better.
We are off on a journey called life
We are not walking side by side,
but we are looking up at blood-red moons.
We are kayaking with grey seals,
And watching the diving lunes,
and we are celebrating years that have passed besides people we love.
Sometimes we remember each other,
And we smile,
Because we are walking apart for now-
But our path was one we shared for a while.
It was a path lined with laughter and love.

This poem is from my series on heartbreak. It represents the light at the end of the healing journey. The point in losing someone when it becomes manageable again, and they become a happy memory of an old friend. It talks about the idea of finding beauty in life after we are apart, and about cherishing the time we had.
