Shards
Your shattered pieces mirror my own.
Refracted images in glass,
showing me the pieces of me that have come unsewn,
and my scars from pains that have passed.
I see how broken you are.
See your sharp edges and the emptiness from all the lost pieces you could never put back.
People have made you feel you are worth nothing more than a glance from afar,
but your brilliant light shines through every crack.
If you could only see the rainbow lights that dart between those pieces of yourself,
or feel how when I look at you, I know I am less alone.
If you could only learn to pick up the lacquer on the shelf,
I think maybe together we have enough pieces to make a home.
If we fill our cracks with enamel of gold,
learn the art of Kintsugi,
make new memories to replace the old,
maybe then the reflection I see
will be one of you standing next to me.
Or are you just here to remind me of my light that I could not quite see…
Without you reflecting it on me.

This poem is written for my series on finding self-acceptance after trauma. Poems from this series touch on themes of abuse, trauma, healing, mental health, and sexuality. This poem looks at what it is like to be in a relationship while you are still healing, with someone else who is also in the process of healing. It is about asking yourself if you are both just there to show each other the work you need to do, or if you can make it through the pain better together.
